Day 2, Part 1

Jared had his motion study today. If you can see on the pictures, he has some pressure measuring instruments attached to his knees to measure the pressure when he walks. Apparently this helps the doctors make decisions during surgery. If you want to see the pictures in a larger format, just click on the picture.

For those of you who don't know, Jared's leg, ankle, and foot problem is a deformity that has gotten progressively worse over the years. He started out with flat feet, then his right foot bones (metatarsal) started to grow toward the right instead of straight, this is why his toes look like they are sideways. His ankle bones, which should be stacked on top of each other, (see the picture below) slipped apart, and his leg bone (tibia) started to torque to the right because of the pressure of the foot twisting to the right. Basically, when Jared stands with his knees together, his left foot faces straight ahead while his right foot faces out at almost 45 degrees to the right. Then there are the issues with the tendons and ligaments and shortening and lengthening here and there. O.K., so this isn't how the doctor describes it, but it's how I understand it.

Did you see the "bed" Jeremy gets to sleep in? (picture below) it should be better tonight, a nurse gave him a pad to put on top of the bed to make it more comfortable. To add to his discomfort, earlier this morning, Jeremy had to make a trek, on foot, down the mountain to find a convenience store to buy batteries for the camera because I didn't think about needing extra batteries before hand. I guess Jeremy's Boy Scout "Be Prepared" lifestyle hasn't rubbed off on me yet. I was mostly concerned about his trek back up the mountain, (yep, it's really steep) but he's still breathing and talking to me so I guess it turned out O.K.

Jared and the other Shriner's kids were busy with art projects this morning. Jared picked out a wood shape and painted both sides. He told me he calls it "Cousin It". You can see pictures of both sides down below. He had fun getting to know the other kids and using up the paint supplies. Shriner's has all kinds of activities and entertainment to keep the kids busy. Last time Jared was there, Kurt Bestor performed a Christmas concernt for the kids.

Anyway, we'll have more photos and information later this evening. Jeremy is going to try to post a video of the gait study. Jared says "Hi, Mom!" to Andrea. He's hoping his friends and family will check out the blog and leave him messages.
